Legendary broadcaster Ernie Johnson will end his 37-year run with “Inside the NBA” after the 2026-27 season, he announced Wednesday in a video on X. Johnson, 70, said, “It’s just time,” and later revealed he has dealt with heart issues and underwent bypass surgery 14 months ago, making him realize he wants to spend more time with his wife and grandchildren. “This is by no means the end,” Johnson said. “It’s just a turning of the page, and I’ll forever cherish every chapter we have written with ‘Inside the NBA.’ And lastly, I just want to say thanks to you. Johnson joined the following year and became the iconic voice to navigate the observations and personalities of the studio show’s analysts. Johnson and his longtime crew include Kenny Smith (who joined in 1998), Charles Barkley (2000) and Shaquille O’Neal (2011). Barkley said last month that he planned the 2026-27 season to be his final season on the show as well. “I’ve long described it as a ‘get-to job.’ I’m still amazed that I get to do this for a living,” Johnson said. “It’s been an honor to share so many nights, decades actually, at the desk with my brothers — Kenny, Charles and Shaq — and with our production crews who are so talented and devoted. And I so appreciate the leadership at TNT and ESPN for allowing the show to continue.” After 35 years on Turner networks, the show moved to ESPN at the start of the 2025-26 season when Turner lost its NBA media rights in 2025. Disney agreed to license the show as part of a settlement between the league and Warner Bros. When Johnson finally interviewed O’Neal and his father in the early 90s, O’ Neal considered it an honor. “It was a big day for me, but it was a bigger day for him,” O’Neal said. “ Because you’re well respected in what you do. You never pass judgment. You’ re good on your facts. You’re delightful to watch. Speak positive about everyone. “ … Then, I got the opportunity to come here and work for you. I only came here because you were here. You are the controller of this thing people call the circus. It’s the best circus in town, but without you, it’s going to be very, very difficult.
