Former Laker Rick Fox appears to think the 41-year-old doesn’t, and he claimed on his Lone Wolf Podcast that the Philadelphia 76ers will erect a statue of him long before the Lakers. “Today’s hot take: LeBron James will get a statue in Philly long before he ever gets one in L.A.,” Fox said. “And honestly, that’s exactly how it should be. Because the Lakers have a line. And man, is that line ever long. Starting with Dr. Jerry Buss, who won 10 titles as an owner. No statue. Phil Jackson, five rings as a coach. He’s scheduled for his statue next year. “Michael Cooper, five, Derek Fisher, five, Kurt Rambis, four, ‘Big Game’ James Worthy, three, and a Finals MVP,” Fox continued. “Byron Scott, three. A. C. Green, three. [Robert Horry], three. Brian Shaw, three. And my personal hero, Mychal ‘Sweet Bells’ Thompson, he won two. Pau Gasol, two, and Pau has a jersey in the rafters. Oh, and yeah, me, Rick Fox. I, too, won three championships. “All Laker greats, every one of us, with more rings in purple and gold than LeBron,” Fox added. “None of us with statues yet.” As of now, the Lakers have honored Chick Hearn (broadcaster), Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, Pat Riley, and Shaquille O’Neal with statues. Phil Jackson will be the next to get one, and it will be unveiled on April 9, 2027. Hearn and Baylor aside, they all won multiple titles with the Lakers as a player, or a coach, or an executive. Fox believes he and other Lakers players who won multiple titles should get statues before James does. The 22-time All-Star won just one title with the franchise in 2020. James also didn’t come particularly close to winning another with the Lakers. It should be pointed out, though, that he was the best player on a title-winning team in Los Angeles, something that can’t be said about Fox, now a politician in the Bahamas, or the names he mentioned. James Worthy might still have an argument for a statue, but that’s about it. Now, Worthy isn’t sure James will get a statue from the Lakers. Unlike Fox, he acknowledged that the NBA’s all-time scoring leader did a lot during his time with the franchise. James deserves more respect for his time in Los Angeles. Fox, who spent seven seasons with the Lakers from 1997 to 2004, didn ’t give him much here, though. “Now when you look at Philly, on the other hand, they haven’t won since Moses Malone and [Julius Erving] in 1983,” Fox said. “Yet the governor gave LeBron a holiday before he even practiced. My advice, LeBron, bring the Sixers and the city a ring, and they’ll put you right next to Wilt [Chamberlain]. And this isn’t just me talking. “My guy Shaq said, one ring gets LeBron invited to the party, but unfortunately, there’s no room on the stage,” Fox continued. “And history has already written this script before. Wilt Chamberlain won a ring as a Laker in 1972. Where’s his statue, you ask? Philly, outside the arena. I won three rings in the Staples Center, so I know what the standard feels like. It ’s not about how great you are. “It’s about how many banners you hung,” Fox added. “So LeBron, I think you were correct in your decision to join the Sixers, especially if it’s a statue you also are chasing. The fastest route definitely runs through Philly. Win a championship in the next two years, and I am sure they will put you right next to Wilt Chamberlain outside that arena.” Well, it’s unlikely James, the No. 1 pick in the 2003 NBA Draft, is “chasing ” a statue. Worthy felt he would get one from the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat, and he probably will. Another statue won’t change James’ life in any way. That said, he will likely get one outside the training complex if he ends the 76ers’ 43-year title drought. James signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the 76ers this summer. He clearly wants to win his fifth title, and it will be interesting to see whether he achieves that goal.
