Once again, it's time for a rebuild for the Kings. At least it's coming off a period of semi-success this time around. LaVine won't get offers that approach the $48.9 million player option he holds for next season. The veteran shooting guard also isn't quite to the point where he should be focused on years over dollars either. Picking up that sizable option for next season, then seeing where things are at a year from now is the sensible path for LaVine. Unfortunately, that's not the best path for the Kings, but it is what it is. The Kings can waive DeRozan and would be on the hook for just $10 million. Doing so would bring Sacramento under the first apron, and within striking distance of getting out of the tax entirely. Given that the team should be rebuilding, and DeRozan has no place on a rebuilding team, waiving the veteran wing should be the way this goes. DeRozan's deal doesn't fully guarantee until January. That means Sacramento could also look to find a trade, which would remove the full salary from the books, without leaving behind the $10 million in dead money. Sabonis has been terrific for the Kings, but he makes over $94 million fully guaranteed through 2027-28. Sabonis isn't good enough to drag the Kings to playoffs by himself, nor is he a great plug-and-play five, because he's a center who doesn't protect the rim. If a playoff contender finds themselves short on second unit playmakers, they might have interest in picking up Monk. Again, Sacramento doesn't need to win the trade here. The good news? Hunter only has one year left on his contract entering next season. That means moving him shouldn't be too difficult. Given Hunter's past as a productive rotation player on good teams, Sacramento shouldn't have to pay to get off his deal either. Keegan Murray's new deal will kick in, and it looks like an overpay right now. But if Murray can get (and stay!) healthy, he should provide value on his extension. If the Kings move on from some others, Murray will be given every chance to do more in a bigger role. Maxime Raynaud, Nique Clifford and Dylan Cardwell are all keepers out of the team's young group. But Dybantsa and Boozer would be fine, as their potential is more than enough to outweigh any potential positional fit issues.If Sacramento is outside of the top three, they can still land Caleb Wilson, Darius Acuff Jr., Kingston Flemings, Keaton Wagler or Mikel Brown, that would work too. It might take a couple of years to get things moving back in the right direction, but it has to happen. And it's not like Kings fans don't have experience waiting for things to get good again. No fanbase in the league has been more loyal during decades of rebuilding than the one in Sacramento. The Kings leadership has to give them something to put in hope again.
